AJ Bretherton Boosts Business with the Innovative JCB Pothole Pro

A groundworks and plant hire specialist in Blackburn is winning new business thanks to the purchase of a game-changing road repair machine, the JCB Pothole Pro.

Owned by AJ Bretherton, the machine is being used to repair potholes under contract to Blackburn Borough Council, as well as tackling private resurfacing projects such as car park repairs.

The award-winning JCB Pothole Pro is a unique 3-in-1 solution designed to fully mechanise pothole repairs and larger reinstatement works. With dedicated attachments to cut, crop, and clean, the need for multiple machines or extra manpower is eliminated—delivering significant time and cost savings.

Capable of repairing a pothole in under eight minutes, the Pothole Pro is four times faster than traditional methods and costs half as much, around £30 per repair compared to up to £60. While a standard pothole gang can fix about 10 potholes per day, the Pothole Pro can complete more than 50 in the same time.

Why AJ Bretherton Chose the Pothole Pro

“We like to support British manufacturing, which is one of the reasons we choose JCB,” explained Alan Bretherton, Owner of AJ Bretherton. “It’s also a comfort thing for us—the cab in a JCB is second to none, and our operators love them. When it comes to the JCB Pothole Pro, there’s simply nothing else like it on the market. For our type of work, it’s the only choice and is helping us land more contracts of this nature. It’s been brilliant for our surfacing work.”

Supplied by dealer Gunn JCB, the Pothole Pro joins AJ Bretherton’s all-JCB fleet, which includes TM320s, a JCB 403 Plus, JS130 tracked excavators, a JCB compaction roller, and two JCB Fastrac 4220s. These machines also support the company’s 350-acre beef and sheep farm.

A Longstanding Commitment to JCB

AJ Bretherton’s relationship with JCB spans over three decades. Founded more than 30 years ago as a sole trader, the company has grown into a 40-strong team based in Blackburn. Over the years, it has purchased more than 40 JCB construction and agricultural machines, a testament to its commitment to British-built equipment and the performance these machines deliver.

The investment in the JCB Pothole Pro represents the company’s dedication to innovative technology that improves efficiency, reduces costs, and helps secure new contracts—keeping roads and infrastructure in better condition for the local community.
