Unveiling the Finlay J-1280: Performance Engineered for Flow

Finlay is the global manufacturer of mobile crushing, screening and conveying equipment, and part of the Terex Corporation. The company recently invited Awesome Earthmovers to the official launch of a new crusher. The Finlay J-1280 Jaw Crusher is robust and powerful. Moreover, it marks a long-awaited addition to Finlay’s tracked mobile crusher range.

The company developed it strategically to fill the gap between two of its best-selling crushers, the J-1175 and the heavy-duty J-1480. As a result, it delivers performance, transport efficiency and versatility. Finlay summed that up in the tagline chosen for the launch: “Performance Engineered for Flow.”

From One Screening Unit to a Global Brand

In 1958, founder John Finlay introduced his first mobile screening unit to the UK and Irish markets. Since then, Finlay has evolved into a globally recognized brand, synonymous with innovation and reliability in mobile crushing and screening solutions.

Finlay’s global presence now spans the Americas, Asia, Africa and Europe. Meanwhile, dealers around the world support the large-scale operation, offering rental of conveyors, crushers and screeners as well as sales. Furthermore, this distribution network is essential for delivering timely parts and service support to Finlay customers at the local level.

Founded in 1958, Finlay has been part of the Terex Corporation for decades.

Awesome Earthmovers saw the new J-1280 demonstrated in real working conditions at a quarry in Northern Ireland. Indeed, the still-sparkling orange paintwork looked striking among the dust and rubble.

Notably, a Doosan DX530LC loaded the crusher, supported by a Caterpillar 972M wheel loader. Altogether, the machines on site were of a similar scale, and the entire line worked smoothly and efficiently.

Inside the Finlay J-1280 Jaw Chamber

The J-1280 features a large 1200mm x 820mm (47″ x 32″) jaw chamber. In turn, that gives it a wide gape and excellent material throughput.

Admittedly, it sits at the smaller end of Finlay’s crusher range. Even so, it maintains the high standards of engineering and structural integrity the brand is known for. Consequently, the unit suits contractors working across multiple sites. Its design allows easier transport and quicker setup and breakdown. Those are critical factors for efficiency and cost management.

Two engine options are also available. Tier 3 / Stage III machines run a Caterpillar C13 producing 440hp at 1800rpm. Tier 4F / Stage V dual-certified machines use a Scania DC13 producing 450hp at 1800rpm.

“This balance of size and mobility has been a direct response to strong feedback from the Finlay distribution network, who emphasised the need for a lighter, more transportable model yet with the same jaw dimensions (1200x820mm) of our highest-selling units in several key regions,” explained Martin Conway, Finlay’s Global Sales & Marketing Director.

Why the Hydrostatic Drive Matters

Adding to its appeal is the Finlay J-1280’s hydrostatic drive system, which distinguishes it from many competitor models. Unlike traditional direct drive crushers, the hydrostatic setup allows the jaw to operate in reverse.

Above all, that reverse function is vital for clearing blockages safely and efficiently. As a result, it reduces downtime and improves overall site safety. In addition, it eliminates time-consuming lock-out/tag-out procedures. Operators can therefore maintain productivity without working at height or close to the jaws.

Three Feed Configurations

The machine comes with three different feed-in configurations to match various site requirements. For instance, buyers can specify a standard vibrating grizzly feeder (VGF) or a pre-screen version for fines removal. Alternatively, an extended pan feeder with pre-screen gives consistent material flow.

This flexibility means the Finlay J-1280 can be tailored to different needs and applications. Equally, it suits quarrying and demolition, and it covers a wide scope of material types.
