Australian Earthmoving From The Ground Up

In 2024, during a trip to Australia, an opportunity arose to visit Starbuck Excavation and meet its founder and CEO, Jimmy Starbuck. The visit included live basement excavation projects in Melbourne’s St Kilda and Brighton Beach suburbs, where the contractor was operating a mixed fleet focussing on operational flexibility and steady growth. Machines on site included a John Deere E210, a Hidromek HMK 145 short-radius excavator, a Cat 320E and a newly delivered Kobelco SK235 short-radius unit, each selected to suit the tight-access, urban nature of the work.

STARBUCK Excavation was founded in the mid-2000s by Jimmy Starbuck, who entered the industry as a teenager with one second-hand 2.7-tonne Case CX27B mini excavator purchased at auction. At the time, the operation was modest, focused on small jobs around Melbourne, with Starbuck himself undertaking every role, from machine operator to estimator and bookkeeper. What differentiated the business in its early years was not size or capital, but consistency. Regular site attendance, reliability and a willingness to take on increasingly complex work gradually opened the door to larger contracts.

Nearly two decades on, Starbuck Excavation has evolved into a major regional contractor, operating more than 30 company-owned machines ranging from compact minis through to 40-tonne production excavators. Supported by a substantial transport fleet, float trailers and a network of subcontractors and rental equipment the company are able to scale rapidly; on an average working day, more than 40 personnel may be active across multiple sites, not only in metropolitan Melbourne but also in regional Victoria and interstate locations including New South Wales and South Australia.

Despite this growth, the company’s operational philosophy remains grounded. Starbuck has built a reputation for maintaining hands-on involvement in the business, retaining oversight of site operations, financial controls and client relationships. Central to this approach is a strong emphasis on professionalism and respect, paying suppliers on time, honouring commitments and treating all personnel equally, regardless of role. This ethos has become a defining feature of the brand and a key factor in staff retention and repeat client engagement.

Strategic decision-making has also played a significant role in the company’s expansion. Known within the industry for a strong aptitude with numbers, Starbuck applies detailed cost analysis to every project, focusing on fuel consumption, production rates and cost per cubic metre. However, he is quick to point out that technical ability alone does not guarantee success. Instead, the business has grown by identifying gaps and addressing them through targeted recruitment, ensuring that operational, administrative and managerial functions are adequately resourced.

One of the most visible outcomes of this pragmatic approach is the company’s deliberately diverse equipment fleet. Rather than aligning exclusively with a single manufacturer, Starbuck Excavation operates machines from multiple OEMs. This strategy was shaped by earlier experiences that highlighted the risks of over-reliance on one supplier. Today, the fleet includes established premium brands alongside newer entrants, providing flexibility in procurement, parts supply and capital investment. The company closely monitors emerging manufacturers, particularly from Asia, balancing purchase price against long-term durability and support.

Looking ahead, growth plans remain measured and practical. Rather than pursuing headline-grabbing mega-projects, the company’s focus is on operational depth, investing in GPS technology, improving environmental performance, and reducing downtime through better logistics. Longer-term ambitions include establishing regional depots to reduce travel time and improve response efficiency. Equally important is continued investment in people, with structured operator development pathways, training programmes and leadership opportunities designed to build capability from within.
