Few dealer customer relationships in Australian civil construction run as deep as the one between Montdami Constructions and William Adams CAT. It’s a partnership built on longevity, shared values and a mutual understanding of consistently high-quality work in a demanding industry.

William Adams’ Caterpillar is a story dating back to 1926, just a year after the first Caterpillar-branded tractor rolled off the production line. The company itself traces its roots to 1884, when William John Adams began trading railway equipment in a growing Melbourne. Over the decades, the business evolved, but today it is synonymous with Caterpillar. William Adams has remained a cornerstone of Australia’s heavy equipment sector, supporting customers across construction, infrastructure and industry.

One of those long-standing customers is Montdami Constructions. Family-owned and operating across Greater Melbourne since 1976, Montdami has earned a reputation for being agile, adaptable and able—qualities that are increasingly essential in modern civil construction. The company delivers a broad scope of work, from residential subdivisions and road construction to stormwater infrastructure, water main installation, soil remediation, bridges, retaining walls and even golf course redevelopments.

Awesome Earthmovers visited Montdami on a housing subdivision project in Rowville, Melbourne, to see their extensive fleet of Caterpillar machinery.

Montdami has relied on Caterpillar equipment since the business was founded, and today operates a fleet of 58 Cat machines, spanning rollers, excavators, backhoes, scrapers, graders, dozers, skid steers, compactors and wheel loaders. Caterpillar makes up around 75% of the entire fleet.

“We have a great relationship with William Adams and source all of our Caterpillar equipment through them,” the team explains. “The level of customer service, respect and support is a big reason we keep coming back. If there’s ever an issue, they’re always willing to sit down and work through it with us.”

Reliability, parts availability and ongoing product innovation are central to Montdami’s fleet decisions. Caterpillar’s scale, investment in R&D and broad equipment offering give the contractor confidence that the machines they buy today will still be supported well into the future.

Performance Where It Counts

The largest machine on site during our visit was a 50-tonne Cat 349D L crawler excavator. Powered by a Cat C13 engine, the machine combines power with the kind of operator comfort that matters on long shifts. Excellent cab visibility, intuitive controls and a spacious layout make it well suited to busy subdivision work where precision and awareness are critical.

Working alongside it was a Cat 930K wheel loader, a popular choice for its fuel efficiency, smooth hydraulics and operator-friendly cab design. Low-effort joystick controls, excellent all-round visibility and Caterpillar’s hydraulic cylinder damping system all contribute to reduced fatigue and consistent productivity.

Also on site were a Cat D6 dozer, a VHP Plus grader and a CP563D soil compactor.

A Hands-On Culture

Area Manager Darren Lamb and Site Foreman Rod Lay are both ex-operators and that mindset still shapes how Montdami operates today.

“There’s nothing like being able to show someone how to do something properly,” says Rod. “I don’t expect anyone to do a task I wouldn’t do myself.”

Darren agrees. “We get out on site, support the crews and use our experience to help get the job done right first time. That’s how we maintain standards and keep clients happy.”

It’s a philosophy that mirrors William Adams’ own approach, practical, responsive and grounded in real-world experience. Together, the two businesses continue to deliver civil construction projects across Victoria with a combination of capable people, proven processes and Cat machines that do exactly what they’re built to do.
