JCB’s Hydrogen Engine Clears Major Regulatory Hurdle with Full EU Type-Approval

JCB has reached a landmark achievement in its mission to decarbonise the construction and heavy equipment industry, securing full EU type-approval for its pioneering hydrogen combustion engine. The certification grants the green light for JCB’s hydrogen technology to be sold and deployed across all 27 EU member states, as well as countries recognising EU approvals, such as those in the EEA and EFTA zones.

This approval certifies the engine to EU Stage V emissions standards under Regulation (EU) 2016/1628—officially confirming that hydrogen, when used as a fuel in combustion engines, meets Europe’s most stringent emissions legislation for non-road mobile machinery (NRMM).

This is not only a regulatory milestone—it’s a shot across the bow in the race to net zero. The announcement reinforces JCB’s position as the first major construction equipment manufacturer to bring a fully approved hydrogen-fuelled combustion engine to market.

“It was not so long ago that some said it was ‘game over’ for the internal combustion engine in Europe,” said JCB Chairman Lord Bamford, who has personally championed the hydrogen engine project. “To have secured full EU type-approval is proof that the combustion engine still has a vital role to play in a zero-carbon future—when fuelled by hydrogen.”

Game-Changing Momentum

Backed by a £100 million investment, JCB’s hydrogen programme has been in development for almost four years. The company’s dedicated team of 150 engineers has already delivered more than 130 prototype engines, which are currently powering backhoe loaders, Loadall telehandlers, and generator sets in advanced field trials.

JCB’s hydrogen engines are now entering final testing in real-world conditions, edging closer to commercial deployment. As anticipation builds among operators and contractors looking for viable low-carbon alternatives, Lord Bamford confirmed:

“Our customers are patiently waiting for our hydrogen-powered equipment to make a difference on their job sites. They won’t have much longer to wait.”

A UK First, Now a European First

JCB’s hydrogen engine was previously granted UK type-approval, initially under ‘new technology’ provisions and now under full regulatory recognition. The EU-wide certification follows similar rulings in nine other European countries, where the engines were already approved for commercial use under transitional rules.

But this latest type-approval marks a crucial shift—from trial and exception to full acceptance. It clears the way for widespread adoption of hydrogen-fuelled internal combustion engines across European construction sites, mines, quarries, and infrastructure projects.

What’s Next?

This breakthrough opens the door for both in-house deployment and third-party OEM integration. Equipment manufacturers can now utilise JCB’s approved hydrogen engines across a variety of platforms, with the added assurance that they comply with the strictest environmental legislation on the continent.
