Hitachi CM Expands Electric Excavator Portfolio

Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe has expanded its electric excavator portfolio with the launch of the new ZX135 7EB, a 13 tonne battery powered machine designed for zero emission operation.

The introduction of the ZX135 7EB strengthens Hitachi’s commitment to developing electric construction equipment, particularly for use in urban and residential environments where noise and exhaust emissions are increasingly regulated.

The ZX135 7EB produces zero exhaust emissions and operates at lower sound levels than comparable diesel machines. Hitachi states that the electric model also benefits from reduced maintenance requirements and lower downtime, supporting improved long term operating efficiency.

Comparable performance to diesel model

The new electric excavator is engineered to deliver performance comparable to the ZX135 7 diesel model. It is suitable for a wide range of applications including urban infrastructure projects and residential developments, where emission and noise restrictions are often in place.

Flexible charging options

The ZX135 7EB can operate in two distinct modes. In battery mode, the machine is powered by a 198 kWh lithium ion battery pack. Alternatively, it can operate in wired grid assist mode when connected to a CEE 400 V AC three phase power supply, allowing continued operation while charging.

This dual mode capability supports extended working hours and greater operational flexibility. The electric drive system can be monitored remotely, including battery status and motor load factor, helping fleet managers track performance and efficiency. Hitachi indicates that overall maintenance costs are expected to be lower compared with diesel powered equivalents.

Lower external noise levels also provide increased flexibility when working in sound sensitive areas, enabling contractors to operate within restricted time windows.

Safety features include the Aerial Angle camera system, which provides a 270 degree bird’s eye view of the working area to improve site awareness.

Continued focus on zero emission development

Norihiko Kinugawa, Product Manager at Hitachi Construction Machinery Europe, said the ZX135 7EB has been developed to deliver productive and efficient performance on urban and residential construction projects while meeting growing demand for zero emission equipment.

He added that Hitachi continues to focus on safety, productivity and reduced life cycle costs as the market transitions towards lower emission machinery.

The ZX135 7EB represents a further step in Hitachi’s broader strategy to expand its electric construction equipment range across Europe.
